Queer + Co Series with Riley

Riley and I met when she came to freelance for me in my studio back in 2019. We became fast friends. She’s truly one of a kind and an incredibly hard working talented floral designer. I love seeing the world through her eyes when we we get a chance to be around one another.

To learn more about Riley and her amazing story, scroll below.

Briefly introduce yourself.

My name is Riley Joyner. I’m 31 years old and I identify as a transgender lesbian. I’ve been working in florals for roughly 10 years, freelancing for various design studios and beyond that, dumping buckets and driving vans for my family’s flower wholesale company.

Share what drives your creativity?

What drives my creativity more than anything is my scattered brain producing lightbulb moments. Shape, texture, color, & composition are everywhere and sometimes something just grabs you. Shakes you. Moves you.

Tell us more about your creative journey?

As a little kid, I loved to draw anything and everything around me. I discovered punk in my teen years and began playing in various bands as well as creating images for flyers, shirts, album art, etc. After working for my family’s wholesale company for a few years in my early adulthood, I decided to start working for designers to understand their processes more intimately. After falling backwards into the hands of some great and inspiring people, I love it now more than ever.

What inspires you?

My environment drives me more than anything. I love being from Southern California. Where else can you see bougainvillea overgrown spilling over a dumpster & broken 40 ounce bottles next to Matilija poppies on a street median? I’ve always been drawn to the DIY ethos of punk and flowers feel like an extension of that.

What is your message to the queer community?

Thank you. Thank you for inspiring me to be myself. Thank you for your influence. I am endlessly grateful and indebted to the queer community for showing me that my life was not only possible, but valid, and something that is to be celebrated.

What does it mean to be queer and in the floral industry?

I can only speak from my experience, but as a late bloomer (pun intended) I couldn’t be luckier to do the type of work that I do. Transitioning later in life can be scary and dangerous for a myriad of reasons, but there is mostly safety and security in my workplace and the people I work with. I get to work alongside a lot of wonderful queer people. It’s my floral community and my queer community that make me feel at home.

Queer + Co Series with Brandon

When I started my business I knew that I wanted to create a safe space for fellow creatives from all walks of life. Diversity, inclusion, kindness and doing things out of love are a huge part of my core beliefs. This month I am sharing incredible stories of individuals whom I’m lucky enough to call friends. I am inspired by their resilience, tenacity and creative spirits.

Today I’m introducing you all to an amazing young artist named Brandon. We met in person for the first time last year after I invited him to come to my studio to create florals just for fun via Instagram. Social media when used purposely can help to foster and create community amongst fellow creatives. I’ve loved watching Brandon explore and experiment with flowers and I can’t wait to see where his creative journey will take him.

To learn more about Brandon and his amazing story, read more below.

Brandon in his element with a bloom

Briefly introduce yourself.

I’m Brandon Nguyen (he/him), the founder of Fleur Boy. Queer, Asian, and f**king proud. I’m a multi-medium artist and love connecting with people through my floral work that highlights my cultural roots. I especially love combining flora + fruits in my work, the sexiest dynamic duo.

Share what drives your creativity?

Everything. It’s hard to pinpoint one source of inspiration and that’s why I have so much fun when I design. For me, the play aspect of designing is so foundational and helps guide me in my day to day life beyond flora. When I feel that I’m too much in my head about my direction for a piece, I remind myself that all of my visions are within me. Creating from that perspective allows me freedom to express myself in a way that isn’t tied down to a rigid formula.

Tell us more about your creative journey?

I’m discovering that the many creative flows that I tap into stem from my own identities, specifically my queer and Vietnamese roots. Growing up with these nuanced identities introduced struggles that helped me evolve into the person I am today. My personal evolution is tied deeply to my creative journey. The deeper I swim into the depths of who I am, the more authentic my designs feel to me. Translating my soul through flora has healed me in profound ways and through this vulnerability, I continue to discover new paths within my evolving creative journey.

What is your message to the queer community?

Step into your power and pave your own path. It’s not always going to make sense and that’s okay, every blessing that is rightfully yours will fall into your lap. Lean into your process and do what you were destined to do. To end it, show up as you are and shake the world up!

What does it mean to be queer and in the floral industry?

It is a radical resistance to the social structures that have existed within this industry. There is no way around the fact that the industry highlights and mainstreams White talent over queer BIPOC designers. I am grateful for the connections I continue to make with other artists who bring so much flavor and flare to the flora world.

Beyond the flora world, being queer is liberating. It’s empowering. It’s healing. The fears that once held me back from expressing my complexities still exist, but they no longer have agency over how I choose to articulate my colors. We got this, you got this.

Get outside.

This month I wanted to highlight sustainability, one of my core business values. What it means to me as a business owner and as a human to put our earth first with my flower work.

I loved sharing how I apply sustainability practices in my floral production, with my installations and with my event breakdowns. My wish is for each of you to take the time to vote for our planet first.

This brings me to my self care tip for the month of April to get outside and commune with nature. This practice has always helped me to reconnect to our earth and to recenter myself. Being outdoors is an activity I can remember back to when I was little playing in our back/front yard with my siblings. There is something about the fresh air, sunshine and all the natures surroundings that improve our moods, creativity and wellbeing. That’s why it’s one of my go to tips for self care this month. Take a look at my list below detailing tips on one of my favorite activities for getting out in nature.

IMG_6580.jpg

My tips on picnics

  1. Plan a picnic with yourself, your significant other or some of your besties

    1. Parks, beaches and your own backyard are great for picnics

  2. Pack a cute bag with food, drinks, water and a blanket

  3. Be sure to wear sunscreen and bring a hat

  4. Bring a book, magazine or simply enjoy the views around you

  5. Bring some games to play with your friends or yourself

I encourage you to do this often. If you rather do something else rather than a picnic, other great activities include taking walks (our own neighborhoods are perfect), take up an active hobby you’ve always wanted to try or restart one you’ve enjoyed before and haven’t gotten around to in some time. Whatever it is that you like to do outside, go and do it and do it often. It will boost your mood, help you think, clear your head and the sleep benefits are priceless.

I hope these self care tips encourage you to spend time appreciating Mother Earth and all the amazing things it does for us on a daily basis. If you have tips you’d like to share on how you spend time outdoors, do leave them in the comments below. Also, see you all here next month for my self care tips for May!

Sustainability Series 2 - Installations

Welcome to the second topic of my sustainability series in honor of Earth Day. Today I’m sharing how I create sustainable foam-free installations. These include ceremony arches, aisle flowers, escort card displays and sweetheart tables for weddings to installations for corporate events, branded backdrops and seasonal storefront photo moments.

I’ve always been drawn to the larger scale floral moments, they’re my jam! I love the challenge of creating something new and unique for each client in a new setting. Figuring out the mechanics of each installation and seeing it come to life keeps me inspired and is so rewarding. Installations require some serious planning, time and experience to execute. There’s math involved, measuring tape, tools, ladders and so much prep. Let me emphasize this again so much prep!

Check out the the list of materials I use below to make sure my installations are foam-free, sustainable and most importantly they look beautiful too.

Series 2 on installations

Branches

Chicken Wire

Water Tubes

Buckets

Moss

Cemetery Floral Cones

Biodegradable Foam

I recommend the following when planning to install an arch;

  • Schedule a site visit if you’ve never worked at a venue before

  • Ask for measurements and photos if a site visit is not possible

  • Check the weather and wind prior to and on your install day

  • Test out your arch stability and mechanics in your studio

  • On hot days bring a hat, sunscreen, plenty of water, and a pop-up canopy

  • Hire enough experienced hands to help design, carry items and clean

  • Bring a sketch or inspiration photo to share with your design team

  • Arrive as early as you can so you have plenty of time to complete your arch

Here are a few of my favorite foam-free sustainable designs from years past.

Next week I’m wrapping up this series on how I practice sustainability when I strike events. This is where my team and I come back to tear down an event or installation. I’ll share my techniques for how I reduce waste and repurpose the materials I use, including the flowers as well.

Let me know what you think, has this series inspired you to start your sustainability journey? If you are already practicing sustainability and have tips to share, please leave them in the comments below.

Sustainability Series - Production

In honor of Earth Day (celebrated on April 22nd), I’m dedicating this month to sharing my sustainability practices with you. My first topic in this series is on sustainability in production. When I prepare (which in the floral industry is called production) for an event like a wedding, I am mindful of the products I source and use while creating these florals for my events.

I started thinking seriously about how much waste is created in the florals industry and my impact 3 years ago. Which motivated me to start implementing changes into my business practices. It didn’t all happen at once and I’m still making adjustments and learning so much as I continue on this journey. The three pillars of sustainability have helped to keep me focused on the “why”; profits, planet and people.

I encourage you to sit down and take a look at how you can practice being more sustainable in your business now.

Sustainability practices in production

As a floral designer, I use the following products and materials to keep my event production sustainable. Below is a list of those products and where you can source them. As well as a great starter book on mechanics. I hope this encourages you to practice sustainability in your business.

Handmade pottery

Chicken wire

Binding wire and twine

Come back next week to learn more about my sustainability practices in installations. If you have tips on how you practice sustainability in your business, I’m all ears - leave a note in the comments below, I’d love to hear from you!

Drink of the Month

Happy April! I’d like to introduce you to my next drink on the menu - Aviation. I choose this cocktail for the use of creme de violette. 2021 is all about reinventing yourself and the violet flowers represent this perfectly. Did you know that some types of violets bloom twice in one year? The first bloomers in spring are tender and graceful. The second troupe of violets tends to be more hearty, focus-driven…they know they are the last, best chance for survival. This symbolism leaves me thinking about my initial goals and my long term goals.

For the ingredients and instructions on how to make this yummy drink, see below.

Aviation drink

Drink Name

Aviation

Ingredients

  • 11/2 oz gin

  • 1/2 oz maraschino liqueur

  • 3/4 oz lemon juice

  • 3/4 oz creme de violette

  • Edible violet as garnish (optional)

Instructions

Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake for up to 30 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and finish with a garnish. Enjoy!

Featured Entrepreneur - Jess with Cheers Babe Photo

The last but not least female entrepreneur of my women empowerment series is none other than Jess of Cheers Babe Photo! Jess is a talented wedding and brand photographer. I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with her on several weddings, styled shoots and I even did her flowers for her wedding day. Jess really knows how to capture the fun!! I encourage you to check out her images at the end of this post.

Jess of Cheers Babe Photo

Briefly introduce yourself and your business

Hi there, I’m Jess, the founder & lead photographer at Cheers Babe Photo! I’m a major wedding enthusiast and I love working with fun couples to create photo memory magic. Nothing excites me more than a once-in-a-lifetime celebration, and I bring that energy to every wedding I photograph.

I have a small team of talented photographers who help me serve couples up and down the coast of California and beyond. I also love teaching and am passionate about sharing what I’ve learned with young photographers (especially women)!

How were you introduced to Inessa Nichols Design?

Inessa & I met wayyyyy back in 2015 at the very first styled shoot I ever planned. We were connected by a mutual friend, Tiffany Rogan, who was working as a wedding planner at the time and was my initial collaborator for the styled shoot.

I had only heard wonderful things about Inessa, so I boldly asked her to showcase something truly creative. When I do styled shoots, I rarely direct artists on exactly what the final product should look like, knowing that you’ve got to leave that creative space. Each vendor is an expert at what they do and I never want to diminish the potential of a project by micro managing each person.

In turn, Inessa showed up that day with literal floral art pieces. She created a Mondrian-inspired feature wall and some of the most intricate and stunning bouquets I’d ever seen. Needless to say, I’ve been a fan girl ever since, even hiring her for my own wedding in 2016. We’ve gotten to work on many projects & real weddings together since then and I am still in awe of her creations every time!

How did you start your business?

I studied fine art photography in college and was lucky enough to get connected to the wedding industry through an internship I did. At school, I remember sitting through critiques and feeling like, “gosh, everyone takes themselves so seriously, when is this gonna get fun?”. Then I attended my first wedding as an assistant. I was immediately hooked! I think I even started working on my first website that week because I felt so sure that this niche industry was the right fit for me. Finally I had found a way I could use my photo skills in a way that felt authentic to who I am and aligned with what I believe to be the deep and wonderful purpose of taking photos - preserving memories.

From there, I had a lot to figure out. I was 20 years old and knew nothing about running a business, but I hit the ground running. I learned and absorbed knowledge wherever I could find it, second shot for photographers that I admired and eventually had enough work in my portfolio to book my own clients. There’s something pretty magical about those early days where you’re hustling so hard, so if you are in the thick of that season right now, do not give up! It only gets better.

What drives your business, why do you love what you do?

I legitimately think I have the best job on the planet, OMG. Most people assume I love taking pictures and of course I do, but I love my job because I love people and I love weddings. I’m such an extrovert so being around people is a must for me and I’m so lucky to work with such fun couples.

I’ve always loved weddings. I remember the first wedding I ever went to so vividly that I even remember the outfit I wore - mind you, I was about 9 years old. A few years back I learned I was an enneagram 7 (the enneagram is this ancient personality typing system & it’s fascinating) and it solidified a truth that I’ve always known deep down inside of myself, that I’m a celebrator. Some of my best memories have been in moments of celebration and it’s such a privilege to participate in that year after year for my profession.

What is your women empowerment message to fellow and aspiring female entrepreneurs?

Don’t let the noise in. When you start a business, people will come out of the woodwork to tell you what you’re doing wrong, what you should be doing and tell you you’ll never succeed. Listen only to the voices you trust and most importantly, to your own voice. Only you know what your business could truly become and at the end of the day, you can trust your intuition.

That said, also be wary of when your voice goes into “mean girl” mode and tells you you’ll never be enough, or be as successful as that other gal, or any of that crap because it’s not true. Our culture raises women to think we need to compete so when we see another woman get ahead we get down on ourselves rather than feeling inspired or genuinely happy for her. In reality, there’s room for all of us at the top because we are all so unique.

Comparison can steal a lot of progress and waste your time, so find other women who will build you up and support you. Community is essential in my mind to every entrepreneur, so be on the lookout for your ride-or-die gals who will celebrate your wins, understand your losses and give you a killer pep talk when you need one. You’ve got this, sis.

Thank you for tuning in on my IG live sessions to watch as I’ve interviewed the ladies of my women empowerment series. It’s been fun learning more about each one and how they have grown their businesses. May this be an encouragement to you that you can start and run a business and there is a community of female rockstars to help along the way.

Featured Entrepreneur - Krista with Not Just in Novels Floral Design

I’d like to introduce to you our next amazing female entrepreneur, Krista with Not Just in Novels Floral Design!

She’s a fabulous floral designer specializing in natural, organic garden style designs that are always so unique and fun. She has now added pottery making to her list of many talents and I’m obsessed with the pieces she creates. I’ve even used one in my latest spring collection.

Krista of Not Just in Novels Floral Design

Briefly introduce yourself and your business

I’m Krista Menezes and I’m the florist behind Not Just in Novels Floral Design based in Huntington Beach, CA. I also recently expanded my business to include ceramics for purchase and for rental to my clients.

How were you introduced to Inessa Nichols Design?

I met Inessa while we were both freelancing a few years ago in the beginning stages of my floral business.

How did you start your business?

I started my floral business while working a 9 to 5 job in the fashion industry. My fashion career was a lot less creative than I had expected (lots of data entry, staring at a computer screen in a cubicle, and corporate culture) I looked to flowers as my creative outlet and to just be around something that was beautiful that connected me with nature. I started making ceramics 2 years ago to create unique vessels for my clients to rent exclusively from me. I loved it so much and with a LOT of extra time due to Covid, I decided to make lots of other things and sell them in a web shop now!

What drives your business, why do you love what you do?

There are so many reasons why I love what I do. Working with flowers allows me to create beauty with my own two hands, to have a good hard day’s work and see the rewards of that labor. I get to decide what projects I take on and who I work with. My business allows me to work in lots of new and interesting places and meet a lot of talented and wonderful people. It also allows me to have more personal time, time with my husband and daughter and time for my other hobbies like gardening and pottery. Being an event florist can be stressful at times, but nothing compared to that corporate life I used to have.

What is your women empowerment message to fellow and aspiring female entrepreneurs?

Trust your instincts, your gut, what you think is right. Respect the people that do work for you and pay them fairly. Don’t be afraid to say no to people and projects that don’t benefit you and your business, and don’t be scared to say yes to opportunities that might seem too big or hard, you can do more than you think.

Featured Entrepreneur - Angela with Salud Juice

As I continue my women empowerment month, I would like to introduce you to our next rockstar and female entrepreneur - Angela of Salud Juice! Her and I have a great history of working together. She has always been a supporter of my events and workshops by sponsoring and providing delicious juices for our attendees to enjoy. I love collaborating with her to promote each other’s businesses. We have become partners in providing fresh flower bouquets for both of her locations in Long Beach. And I also had the honor of styling and decorating the wedding venue for her beautiful ceremony and reception last year! I have truly enjoyed our friendship and partnership growth over the years and look forward to our ongoing journey together as fellow women business owners. To learn more about Angela’s business and her women empowerment message, read all about it below!

Angela of Salud Juice

Briefly introduce yourself

Angela Almaguer, owner and founder of Salud Juice, a local cold-pressed USDA organic juice bar in Long Beach, California.

How were you introduced to Inessa Nichols Design?

I've done some floral workshops with her where Salud provided juices and snacks to her participants! And then Inessa also helped with the entire plant design at our Salud corner location!

How did you start your business?

My business started my senior year of college when my uncle passed away from cardiac arrest and my father underwent a quadruple bypass surgery two weeks later. My vision of entering my graduate program at LMU and teaching for a program called Teach for America quickly shifted to finding ways to heal my father and spread the knowledge of health and wellness to a larger community. I started making and jarring juice in my apartment kitchen and slowly grew into wholesaling to local coffee shops and restaurants and, after two years, opened my first brick and mortar on 4th and Cherry.

What drives your business, why do you love what you do?

I really do love what I do. I feel like I'm still able to utilize my love for teaching because I'm able to research, develop and educate a large community on something that might otherwise be overlooked. What drives my business is the ability to meet so many people who are choosing to put themselves first. When you choose to take care of your body and mental health, you are putting yourself first and that is so important and so looked down upon in society nowadays. You can't pour from an empty cup. Choosing to take care of yourself is not selfish, it's a necessity!

What is your women empowerment message to fellow and aspiring female entrepreneurs?

Fake it til you make it! Everyone around you who you think is confident and smart is also faking it. Everyone suffers from "imposter syndrome." You have to push past it and believe in yourself even if you don't actually believe it yet! Push past the fear. The fear is a constant but it doesn't have to take the driver's seat.

Featured Entrepreneur - Florist, LeeLina Martin

Happy International Women’s Day! I wanted to featured my next female entrepreneur on this day because she was a big part of last year’s IWD event that I hosted for a small group of local female entrepreneurs and especially because she has been one of my go to girls for installations. I’d like to introduce to you florist, LeeLina Martin! If you missed our IG live interview with her, read more about her business and her women empowerment message below. Also, check out the installation she helped design from our IWD event last year at the end of this post.

Briefly introduce yourself

I am LeeLina Martin and I’m a florist.

How were you introduced to Inessa Nichols Design?

First I was introduced to Inessa the designer. A handful of years later I was introduced to Inessa, the successful business owner of Inessa Nichols Design. It’s been beautiful to watch her grow.

How did you start your business?

I started my business out of a desire to arrange flowers in my unique style instead of trying to do them in someone else’s style.

What drives your business, why do you love what you do?

Because of Covid the reasons I do business have started to evolve and change. There are still good things, good foundations that I’ve keep with me but I’ve been able to shed a lot that is not important, not useful or sustainable. I’m still finding my way, and I hope I never stop learning.

I love what I do because it connects me to other people. Flowers are present at most life-changing moments and I’m able to share in those big moments with people. Share in professions of love, lifelong commitments, happiness, in grief, in apologies, in new life. It’s incredible to be able to express feelings through flowers.

What is your women empowerment message to fellow and aspiring female entrepreneurs?

Be kind. To others and to yourself. Slow down. Read poetry. Be swept away by beauty.

Featured Entrepreneur - Sasha with FarmLot59

To celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD), I’m featuring fellow female business owners each week this month, including one on Monday 3/8/21 (day of IWD). This day has a lasting history for me ever since I was a little girl in Russia, that’s why I want to make it extra special and honor the powerful women that I have come know, love and work with. Without further adieu, I’d like to introduce to you, Sasha of FarmLot59! I hosted an IG Live session interviewing Sasha about her business and had her share her empowerment message to aspiring and fellow female entrepreneurs. Read all about it below!

sasha-fl59-headshot.jpg

Briefly introduce yourself

I'm Sasha Kanno. Founder and Farmer at Farm Lot 59, an Urban farm in Long Beach, California.

How were you introduced to Inessa Nichols Design?

That's a really good question. I don't really remember exactly how we started working together. I think she approached me about buying local flowers and we've been working together ever since. I think it's going on 3 years now.

How did you start your business?

This is such a big question. I started FL59 in 2010 with the help of our amazing Lb community. There was no real farm happening in the city and I thought we needed one. I have a long term lease with the city of LB and over the years we have done so many different things to serve the community. After 10 years I think we have finally hit our stride but still have so much work we can do. That's the super short answer.

What drives your business, why do you love what you do?

We operate FL59 as a non-profit and love to be a community farm. We grow produce for the local food bank and speciality blooms for our amazing designers like Inessa. To have a farm in the city as diverse as LB is such an honor.

What is your women empowerment message to fellow and aspiring female entrepreneurs?

I'd like to say that it's not easy. People will tell you that you won't be successful, that your business model won't make enough money to live on. That they just don't understand what you are trying to do. I love a business plan but also be ready to adapt on the fly. Stick with your overall vision and perseverance will make you successful.

If you choose to have kids and bring them to work with you, be prepared for all the judgement. You're doing it wrong, you're doing it right, you're watching your kid so can you watch my kid? I raised my son on my farm and I can't tell you how many people thought I was down and out because I had him with me. For me, it was a choice to start my farm so I could have him with me and not in daycare or with a nanny. My best decision was to raise my son on a farm in the city. He's turned out to be an amazing human. But be ready for all sides of that conversation.

It's stressful to be a small business owner. You're always working, so find something you can do that’s phone free a few times a week. Swimming or yoga. Make sure you take a break every once in a while.

Mostly I'd like to say that you are a grown-ass woman and you can do whatever you want. Go get it.
